The following are some of the most common questions I have been asked about Ocean Shores by folks like yourselves who are considering relocation.
Question: What is it like here in the summer time when all the tourists come?
My Answer: The "tourists", for the most part, do not even know there is a residential part of our town. They come to stay in the Motel, play on the beach, ride go-carts and bumper boats.
When you live here you learn that you do not go down town on weekends and always go to the grocery store before Friday noon and not again until Sunday afternoon!
Question: What is it like here in the winter? I hear it rains all the time!
My Answer: We get almost 100 inches of rain every year. When it rains, it RAINS. Then the sun comes out. A lot of time it rains all night, then in the morning the sun comes out. We do have our long periods of overcast and drizzle, but I have lived in Seattle and Portland, and find the weather here better.
Question: What range of temperatures should we expect here?
Answer: Usually high sixties to low seventies in the summer, forties to fifties in winter. We usually get cold enough one time during the winter to have a little snow, and I have seen it in the eighties in summer. It is warmer here in winter and cooler than summer than Seattle.
Question: Is that your real name?
Answer: No, my real name is Patricia. See about us.
Question: With all the rain here, do you ever have to water the lawn?
Answer: Yes. Usually between June and the end of September it gets very dry, sometimes no rain at all.
I usually water my lawn at least once a week to keep it green. The city allows homeowners to put in shallow point wells for watering if they want.
Question: Who lives here?
Answer: We have a lot of retired people here. We also have a lot of summer homes. There are people who live here and work in Hoquiam, Aberdeen and even Olympia.
Folks have discovered this is a great get away for some peace and quiet, also to escape the traffic signals.
Question: What do people do here?
Answer: What ever they want to! Lots of people just like to walk and ride bikes, the flatness of our town makes it so nice. Some people prefer to walk the beach, there are also trails that take a person around our beautiful Duck Lake. There is bowling, the Community Club activities, swimming, fishing, boating, bird watching. There are also places such as the Interpretive Center, Gameworld, and the Library. We have some of the best fishing in the state in the lakes. During the summer there are Bass fishing derbies. Of course there are scores of things to volunteer for.
Question: What is the Crime Rate?
Answer: What is a "crime rate"?
Seriously, to this date we have almost no crime. In addition to our Police Department, we have a full staff of volunteer "crime watch" folks, who assist in watching for anything irregular going on. There used to be quite a bit of petty vandalism, but the crime watch has very successful in ending that.
Question: What kind of medical facilities are there:
Answer: We have a local EMT's, 911 emergency ambulance service. The nearest hospital is in Aberdeen and there is a variety of specialist that come there once a week from Olympia. http://www.osgov.com/
